I started out as a chartered surveyor, working the usual 9–5 until I realised the life I wanted wasn’t behind a desk. That led me into setting up a boutique hotel, where I learned the value of design, atmosphere and creating spaces people genuinely enjoy being in.
From there, I took another leap and taught myself carpentry, design, and off-grid building. What began as converting my own vans and trucks for travel slowly evolved into The Fat Pony Workshop — a place where I build one-off homes on wheels, cabins and creative structures using reclaimed materials and a lot of imagination.
Most of what I know has come from doing it myself, living in the spaces I create, breaking things, fixing them, and learning through the process. Each build is a chance to try something new and push an idea a bit further.
I’m now working towards building a Centre for Sustainable Building, so I can pass on what I’ve learned and show that you don’t need huge budgets to create beautiful, functional spaces — just time, creativity and a willingness to get stuck in.
